Description
The Gasbekleidung 39 (often referred to as Gasanzug 39) was a protective suit designed by the German military to shield soldiers from the effects of chemical warfare, specifically blister agents like mustard gas.
Components: The full outfit consisted of a hooded jacket, trousers, gloves, and overboots.
Material: It was made of heavy cotton fabric heavily treated and coated with synthetic rubber (oppanol) or plastic to make it gas-impermeable. It typically featured a dark green or grey-green color.
Usage: mass-produced and issued to front-line troops (usually carried in special rubberized canvas bags). Soldiers found it bulky, uncomfortable, and extremely hot to wear.
